Mary says there are several ways to alter a T-shirt, from fundamental no-sew changes to more advanced tailoring. You can make a shirt smaller by taking in the sides, shortening the length, or adjusting the neckline and sleeves.
Alterations for a better fit
To take in the side seams
This method helps create a more tapered, fitted shape from the bust to the waist.
Turn the shirt inside out and put it on.
Pinch and pin any excess fabric along the side seams until the shirt fits snugly.
Take the shirt off carefully. Flatten it on a work surface, making sure the pinned sides are symmetrical.
Mark the new seam line with tailor’s chalk, using the pins as a guide.
Sew along the marked line with a sewing machine or by hand using a stretch stitch or zigzag stitch, which is essential for working with knit fabric.
Cut off the excess fabric, leaving about 1/2 inch of seam allowance.
Finish the new seam with a serger or a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying.
